:the critic:

For a while now, I have been curious about the role of the critic in what I call the creator/critic relationship.
Last weekend we watched Ratatouille with the kids. I was struck with this critic’s confession (Anton Ego, the food critic). Beautiful. The movie was great too.

I also love the bit about the bitter truth critics must face, the defence of the new, the very real fact that the new needs friends.

The premise in the movie that anyone can cook appeals to me, and so does Anton Ego’s epiphany:

“not every one can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere.”

What is the critic’s responsibility to his field and to those artists that can come from anywhere? And, really, what does one need to possess to be a good critic? What does a good critic mean?
